However, the BBC have now confirmed the Friday night slot will be a permanent arrangement ahead of the Diamond Jubilee, Olympics and Euro 2012.
A spokesman confirmed:
‘Viewers now catch up on EastEnders through digital recorders, our BBC Three repeat or on iPlayer.
‘We’ve therefore decided to move the omnibus.’
The last show that was shown on a Sunday got 792,000 viewers but the views dropped down to 477,000 when it moved to Friday last week.
Some fans of the soap have hit out at the decision on internet forums and Twitter.
One viewer wrote on Digital Spy: ‘This is so stupid. The Sunday omnibus is tradition. Who’ll watch it at that time?’
One Twitter user ranted: ‘Putting the omnibus edition in the middle of the night doesn’t help those of us who don’t get to see all episodes in the week.’
